"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Ending a five-month standoff over a controversial nomination, President Bush on Monday used a recess appointment to name John Bolton the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

"This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform," Bush said from the Roosevelt Room at the White House.

The move bypasses the confirmation process in the Senate, where Democrats had blocked the nomination in a dispute over documents and accusations that Bolton lacks the temperament to hold the U.N. post."

WTF?

The article on CNN said he could because congress is on recess, and there is a provision to appoint him temporarily until congress re-convenes, which is next year some time.

What ever happen to fair representation?

This is pretty standard. Outrageous to be sure, but not a stretch of executive authority. Of course, had Dubya cared about the process he could have just released the documents the Democratic senators wanted and he probably would have been able to get cloture.

I am so disgusted that I cannot even begin to describe it. Our international relations are shot to shit as it is already, now they're just going to become unspeakable.

I'm so frightened. The only thing that gives me hope is that I'll be overseas in a month and the fact that someday myself and my peers will have a chance to make it right once more. This is a sad day for international relations, peace, human rights and anthropologists.

dubya war

Making John Bolton ambassador to the UN is about as good an idea as making Trent Lott the ambassador to South Africa.
